How to use AI and machine learning to improve your graphic design skills

The arrival of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) has impacted many facets of life, including design. While there is some trepidation around what it means for future creatives, the combination of creativity and cutting-edge technology opens up unprecedented possibilities for graphic designers. One thing that is important for all designers to remember is that, before you fear it, you must first understand it.

AI is theoretical intelligence designed to simulate human intelligence. It takes its data from pre-existing sources and performs tasks such as learning, problem solving, and decision making. ML, an important aspect of AI, allows these systems to learn from data and improve over time. These technologies provide powerful tools for incredible efficiency in graphic design. One of the greatest efficiencies is with time. AI can enormously improve the quality of your work by automating mundane tasks and even providing sophisticated design suggestions. It is up to the designer if they wish to run with the suggestion or not but this can often help save long hours of deliberation and data analysis. These tasks include asset organisation, image resizing, and basic layout arrangements. This automation not only expedites the design process, but it also reduces errors, allowing you to concentrate on more complex and creative aspects of your projects. As well as this, ML algorithms can analyse and interpret complex data sets which can in turn, predict trends and user behaviour.

Think of AI as a collaborator rather than a competitor. While AI can make suggestions and perform tasks, the designer's creative intuition cannot be replaced. The combination of human creativity and AI capabilities can result in extraordinary designs. AI generated designs can be a source of inspiration that challenges traditional design thinking. But one of the most significant advantages of AI in graphic design is its ability to personalise at scale.  It enables the creation of designs that cater to individual preferences and behaviours, whether for marketing campaigns or user interfaces.

AI-driven design tools and software are becoming a stalwart presence in design circles. These tools can expedite everything from colour scheme selection to font pairing and layout design. Knowing how to use these tools can significantly boost your productivity. Like most technological advancement, AI is evolving fast so it is incumbent on a graphic designer to at the very least, experiment with new tools to keep their skills relevant and up to speed.

There are however ethical factors to be considered. Intellectual property, authorship and originality are emerging grey areas in terms of ownership and as a designer, it is important not to lose sight of your moral and ethical responsibilities.

The graphic design industry is rapidly moving toward a more AI-integrated future. Being ready for this shift entails not only learning how to use AI tools, but also understanding how to use them to enhance your unique creative voice. By embracing these technologies, you can explore new horizons in your design journey while staying ahead in a rapidly evolving industry.
